The Borough Council runs two museums in Oaklands Park, off
Moulsham Street, Chelmsford - the Chelmsford Museum and the Essex Regiment
Museum. Access to the museums is free. We also run a science resource centre and
open store at Sandford Mill.
Chelmsford Museum is set in a Victorian House, with permanent
displays on the Story of Chelmsford, natural history and geology, coins, art and
social history. There is also a temporary exhibition programme, changing five
times a year, and a busy special events programme.
The Essex Regiment Museum displays the collections of the
Essex Regiment Association in a purpose-built extension opened by Princess
Margaret in 1973, and tells the story of the county regiment from its mid 18th
century origins up to its incorporation in the Royal Anglian Regiment.
Oaklands House is now fully accessible for disabled visitors,
via lifts to the upper floors.
The Visitor Centre is set in mature woodland overlooking the
Hanningfield Reservoir and is the ideal place to start and finish your walk. The
centre has full disabled access as does the Lyster Bird hide that is a short
distance away. There are lots of gifts in the centre shop and a full range of
binoculars and telescopes as well as books and refreshments. So while you're
enjoying a nice warming drink you can take time to enjoy the stunning view over
the water and browse the displays. Turn off the B1007 (Billericay - Chelmsford)
on to Downham Road and turn left on to Hawkswood Road. The Visitor Centre
entrance is just beyond the causeway opposite Crowsheath Lane. Or take the
Wickford - Chelmsford bus to Downham village and walk 800m down Crowsheath Lane.
Open daily. 01268 711001

We are currently the biggest and deepest cold war bunker
open to the public in southeast England! Come and witness the three lives of the
bunker starting with its role as an RAF ROTOR Station, then a brief period as a
civil defence centre through to its most recent life as a Regional Government
HQ. Designed for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the
Prime Minister, their collective task being to organise the survival of the
population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war.
